Program Description The healthcare industry in Canada and around the world is growing rapidly. Within this industry, the use of sophisticated electronic, computer-controlled and networked equipment that is now the norm and requires a skillset that includes the ability to install, calibrate, maintain and manage the life cycle of critical medical equipment. Biomedical engineering technologists are an essential part of a health-care team because they have these skills. The Biomedical Engineering Technology program at Durham College is the only one in Canada that provides a streamlined pathway for students from an advanced diploma to an honours bachelor’s degree and then to a master’s degree. The healthcare industry in Canada and around the world is growing rapidly. To help meet the demand, healthcare has turned to new and innovative medical technology to improve diagnosis, monitoring and treatment - in doing so health care providers have become dependent on the technology to function properly, to be available, and to be managed in a cost effective and efficient manner by qualified biomedical engineering technologists. Your skillset includes the ability to assess current and innovative medical technology, purchase, install, calibrate, maintain and manage the life-cycle of critical medical equipment. Biomedical engineering technologists are an essential part of the health care team because they have these skills. Durham College’s Biomedical Engineering Technology lab is fully equipped including: Anesthesia equipment Bedside and central monitoring Biomedical equipment asset management system Dialysis machines Infusion pumps Patient monitor information and database systems Physiological measurement devices You will work with a variety of biomedical patient simulators and test and measurement devices, in addition to the technologies found in our fully equipped medical electronics repair department. Employers repeatedly require the functional expertise of our graduates.
